There’s something particularly comforting about autumn in the Yorkshire Dales. The landscape takes on its familiar golden hues, the air becomes crisp and cool, and walks that might have ended with a quick cup of tea in summer suddenly call for somewhere warm to sit, something hearty to eat and perhaps a drink beside a crackling fire.
A morning spent exploring the Dales is easily followed by one of Yorkshire’s great traditions: a proper Sunday lunch. In the picturesque village of Askrigg, The Middle House makes a tempting stop after a day in the countryside, serving traditional Sunday lunches made with locally sourced ingredients. Set among the village’s historic stone buildings, it’s the sort of place where muddy walking boots and hungry appetites feel entirely at home.
And if there’s one ingredient that needs little introduction here, it’s Yorkshire Wensleydale. A trip to Hawes offers the chance to see where this famous cheese is made at the Wensleydale Creamery, whose Visitor Centre explores the region’s cheesemaking heritage and offers tastings and demonstrations. It’s an ideal autumn stop: discover how the cheese is made, sample a few varieties, then perhaps take your favourite home to enjoy later.
Of course, no leisurely day in the Dales would be complete without finding somewhere for tea and cake. Traditional tearooms dotted throughout the villages offer a welcome respite from the autumn chill, whether you settle down with a pot of Yorkshire tea and a warm scone or indulge in a slice of homemade cake. There’s something about enjoying it while looking out over stone walls, rolling hills and changing leaves that makes it taste even better.
As the afternoon draws in and the light begins to soften, the Dales takes on an entirely different atmosphere. This is the time for a local ale in a cosy country pub, perhaps with a roaring fire and nowhere else you need to be. There’s nothing better than sampling something with a genuine connection to the local area.
For a final taste of the season, make time to browse the Dales’ farm shops and local producers. Pick up some Yorkshire cheese, freshly baked goods, chutneys or preserves to take home, turning the flavours of an autumn day in the Dales into something you can enjoy long after the leaves have fallen.
Because perhaps that is what makes food and drink here so memorable. It isn’t simply something to enjoy between walks and sightseeing; it is part of the experience itself. So, this autumn, make time to explore not only the spectacular scenery, but also the flavours that make this corner of Yorkshire so special.
