Turbans have long carried layers of meaning. Worn for centuries across various continents, they have come to symbolise everything from spiritual devotion to social status. They’re certainly not out of place in the world of high fashion, either. Various designers are embracing turbans as sculptural, expressive pieces that can define a look and, in some cases, a lifestyle. Yet this growing prominence in the luxury fashion world is not without its complexities

What distinguishes the turban’s ascent in the luxury fashion space is the care with which some brands are approaching it. Rather than reducing it to a visual shorthand for exoticism, designers such as Nerida Fraiman are honouring the turban’s dignity by crafting pieces that feel both contemporary and considerate. In this context, luxury doesn’t simply mean expensive materials or intricate construction, though those things matter. It also implies depth and an understanding of the object’s history and the choice to preserve it’s cultural dignity.

The return of headwear to fashion’s main stage is also tied to a deeper shift in the way we dress. As more people move away from fast fashion and towards pieces with presence and purpose, the turban is particularly compelling, creating silhouette and shape in an outfit while carrying a certain gravitas. For many wearers, the appeal lies in their effectiveness at dealing with things like cultural traditions or hair loss with a striking elegance.

Still, the challenge of balancing fashion’s appetite for reinvention with cultural sensitivity remains real. Turbans, in many traditions, are not fashion items at all- they are sacred, familial, inherited. Their colours, folds, and styles can carry religious, regional, or political meaning. The answer is not to exclude turbans from fashion’s evolution, but to frame them correctly and position them as more than just commodities.

In some cases, the bridge between fashion and heritage is best built by those who have lived on both sides of it. Brands founded by individuals with personal connections to the turban’s cultural story often bring an authenticity that cannot be manufactured.

The growing presence of turbans in high fashion reflects a shift not just in style, but in how clothing communicates identity, history, and intent. Their reappearance on runways and in everyday wardrobes doesn’t erase their cultural weight—it adds a new layer to it. When approached with care and context, turbans can exist in both worlds: as meaningful cultural garments and as deliberate expressions of contemporary style. The distinction lies not in whether they’re worn, but in how and why.
